How Team Danish Kifarus Is Powering Conservation Through the Rhino Charge

In the heart of Baringo’s rugged terrain, where dust dances with wind and every mile tests both machine and spirit, something extraordinary unfolded this year. Car 54 proudly bearing the name “Kifaru,” Swahili for rhino roared to life as Team Danish Kifarus took on the 23rd edition of the Rhino Charge, one of Kenya’s most grueling off-road competitions. But what truly powered this machine wasn’t just a strong engine, it was a shared purpose and a community fueled by conservation.

A Garage, A Mission, and Four Months of Elbow Grease

The journey of Car 54 didn’t begin at the start line. It began months earlier in the Karen Blixen Camp garage, where an unlikely but powerful alliance formed. The Karen Blixen Camp Trust (KBCT) joined forces with auto mechanic students from Zealand Business College (ZBC) in Denmark to breathe new life into the vehicle.

Together, they launched a pilot program, a hands-on initiative that not only restored a rugged 4×4 to competition shape but forged bonds across borders, generations, and disciplines. With spanners in hand and purpose in their hearts, these students transformed Car 54 into a symbol of resilience.

By the time the Rhino Charge kicked off, the team had raised over KES 800,000, a contribution that went straight to Rhino Ark, the organization behind this storied competition.

What Makes the Rhino Charge So Special?

The Rhino Charge is more than just a test of off-road skill. It’s a celebration of innovation, grit, and deep respect for Kenya’s environment. Held annually, it tasks entrants with navigating 13 checkpoints across 100 km² of punishing terrain, all within 10 hours. There are no pre-marked routes, no GPS aids, just strategy, map-reading, and stamina.

But the real win? The money raised supports Rhino Ark Kenya Charitable Trust, an NGO dedicated to conserving Kenya’s fragile “Water Towers” , the mountain ecosystems that sustain both people and wildlife. Every gear shift and checkpoint conquered contributes to a greater mission: preserving biodiversity and mitigating human-wildlife conflict.

Who Are the Danish Kifarus?

Team Danish Kifarus is a passionate group of conservation-minded adventurers, many from Denmark who have found a second home in Kenya. Their name, “Kifaru,” reflects not only the majestic creature they aim to protect but the strength and determination they embody as a team. Their participation in the Rhino Charge echoes their belief in action-based advocacy, where every adventure leaves a lasting impact.

The Karen Blixen Camp Trust was proud to back their effort, not only through technical support but through a shared vision: that sustainability must be a lived practice. And in every bolt tightened, every rally checkpoint passed, and every shilling raised, that vision became reality.

A Story That Continues

This collaboration was more than a race. It was a demonstration of what happens when young minds, dedicated mentors, and a committed hospitality group come together to drive real change.

As we reflect on Car 54’s journey through the dust and heat, we’re reminded that conservation isn’t just about protecting landscapes, it’s about building community, passing on knowledge, and challenging ourselves to go further for what we believe in.
