Paws & Progress: How Sparing 90 Dogs Protects the Mara’s Wildlife
Conservation is about finding the delicate balance between the wild ecosystem and the local communities that call this landscape home. This April, Karen Blixen Camp was thrilled to be the operational hub for the latest Mara North Conservancy (MNC) Dog Project.
Over the course of the project, veterinary teams worked tirelessly at our camp to safely spay, neuter, and vaccinate 90 domestic dogs from the surrounding communities. While it might seem like a small domestic issue, controlling the local dog population has a massive, direct impact on the safety of the Mara’s apex predators. Feral or unvaccinated dogs are the primary transmitters of rabies and canine distemper—diseases that can devastate local lion, leopard, and wild dog populations.
By supporting the health of our neighbors’ pets, we are actively building a disease-free buffer zone around the conservancy. We are incredibly proud of the veterinary teams and the community for coming together to make this happen. When the community thrives, the Mara thrives.
