Sweet Conservation: How Bees are Protecting the Mara
When you think of wildlife conservation in the Maasai Mara, lions and elephants usually come to mind. But last month, the spotlight was on one of nature’s smallest heroes: the honeybee. In conjunction with the Karen Blixen Camp Trust, we recently hosted a comprehensive Beekeeping Training program as part of our ongoing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
The program was designed to equip the local Maasai community with the skills needed to build and maintain apiaries. Beekeeping provides a highly sustainable alternative income through the harvesting and selling of organic honey. However, the benefits extend far beyond economics.
These beehives are strategically placed to act as “eco-fences.” Elephants have a natural fear of bees, and a line of active hives is an incredibly effective, non-violent way to deter them from wandering into human settlements or destroying local vegetation and crops. This innovative approach fosters a peaceful coexistence between the community and the Mara’s gentle giants. It is a sweet victory for both the people and the wildlife of the Mara North Conservancy..
