Safeguarding the Wild: Hosting the MNC Dog Project

Conservation is a deeply interconnected effort. Protecting the iconic wildlife of the Maasai Mara often means taking care of the animals that live closest to us. This week, Karen Blixen Camp is incredibly proud to serve as the host and base of operations for the MNC (Mara North Conservancy) Dog Project.

The local Maasai communities rely on domestic dogs to guard their bomas and livestock. However, if left unvaccinated, domestic dogs can carry diseases such as rabies and canine distemper. These viruses pose a catastrophic threat to the Mara’s wild predators, particularly the highly endangered African wild dogs (painted wolves) and our resident big cats.

The MNC Dog Project is a critical health and conservation initiative. Veterinarians and conservationists gather to provide free health checks, treatments, and crucial vaccinations to the local domestic dog population. By creating a “buffer zone” of healthy, vaccinated domestic animals, we are actively cutting off the transmission routes of these deadly diseases. It is a testament to the fact that protecting the Mara requires looking after every creature, great and small.
