The Countdown Begins: Why the 2026 Great Wildebeest Migration Will Be Legendary
The air in the Maasai Mara is beginning to change. We are officially on the countdown to the arrival of the Great Wildebeest Migration!
Usually peaking in our area between July and October, the migration is a year-round cycle, and the early reports for 2026 are thrilling. Following an exceptionally strong calving season earlier this year in the southern Serengeti—with over 550,000 calves born—trackers are predicting that this year’s herd sizes will be staggering.
Currently, the mega-herds are slowly making their way through the central and western corridors of Tanzania, fueled by the recent rains. Before long, over a million wildebeest, accompanied by hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, will gather at the Sand River and the Mara River, ready to brave the crocodile-infested waters.
Because Karen Blixen Camp is perfectly situated in the Mara North Conservancy, our guests enjoy phenomenal, uncrowded access to the migrating herds and the thrilling predator action that follows them. If you haven’t secured your tent for the migration season yet, the time is now.
